Despite the fact that broadband has been around for many years now, a lot of homes are still without internet. If you have just decided to install your first ever internet connection or, alternatively, if you have just moved house and you need to set up a new connection, there are quite a few things that you will need first.
Some people can become quite confused about how internet connections are installed, but it really couldn't be any simpler at the end of the day. If you would like to find out more about how to install the internet within your home, read on to figure out what it is that you will need.
What kinds of internet connections are available?
There are a number of internet connections that you can choose from, so you will need to think carefully about which would be the best kind for your home and family. You can choose from Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), cable, satellite, fibre-optic and mobile, which is also known as 3G. No matter which internet connection you choose, you will need to ensure that your computer has 64MB of RAM as a minimum.
What do I need for ADSL?
In order to get ADSL broadband you need to upgrade your phone line and you can choose from three different kinds of modem. A USB ADSL modem (provides cabled internet to just one computer), an ADSL router (provides cabled internet to multiple computers) or an ADSL Wi-Fi router (provides internet to multiple computers remotely, without the need for any cables).
What do I need for cable?
Cable internet is often available from cable TV providers. Your chosen company will be able to provide you with a modem or set-top box that comes with internet.
What do I need for satellite?
You must have a satellite dish and a DVB modem for this kind of internet. It is most commonly used in remote areas.
What do I need for fibre-optic?
This is the latest offering in internet connections and can provide you with incredibly fast broadband. You will need to have new wiring installed in order to make the most of it, and you will still need a phone line as this is how the internet signal travels.
What do I need for 3G?
If you don't want to have to install a telephone line, 3G could be ideal. This type of internet uses mobile phone signals to transmit your internet connection, so all you need is a small USB modem which is also known as a dongle.
As you can see, installing an internet connection can be quite easy. Which will you be choosing?
